Upper Dolpa

Package Details

Upper Dolpa is a high-altitude Tibetan cultural region in western Nepal's Dolpa District, which is bordered to the north by China. Dolpa lies in the remote northwest of Nepal, between the Tibetan Plateau and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. It is a mystical land of Buddhist monasteries and a Tibetan culture largely untouched by the world outside the region's borders.

Since 1984, Upper Dolpa Trek has been renowned for the largest Shey Phoksundo National Park.

The park covers 3,500 square kilometres of land, most of which is above 4,000 meters. Musk Deer, Himalayan Blue Sheep, and Snow Leopard are among the many wild animals found in the area. Elevations in the park range from 2,130 m to 6,883 m at the summit of Kanjiroba Himal. Apart from that, the national park is home to multiple other monasteries along with different glaciers.

Shey Phoksundo Lake is one of Nepal’s deepest lakes (146m) and it’s a jewel of Dolpa. The lake stands as a major highlight for trekking and lies at an elevation of 3620m. The lake is clearly observed with turquoise colour and star-like twinkling on the lake due to the reflection of the sun.

Similarly, the best selling book Snow Leopards was written in the Dolpa region, and Eric Valli's Oscar-nominated movie CARAVAN (HIMALAYA) was shot there. Dolpa is also famous for its nutritional and medicinal plants. The main herbs found in that area are Yarcha gamba and Panchaunle.

Another attraction point for upper Dolpa trekkers is  Dho-Tarap valley. Dho-Tarap valley is famous for traditional monasteries and houses built at the height of 4080m. Wood carving is a talent that the locals have. You will observe that the homes and monasteries in this valley are traditionally carved out of wood during your tour.
